Welcome to Willow Fields Equine Therapy

I am Alexis, a behavioral health professional with seven years of experience and a deep commitment to equine-assisted therapy. I am a mother of two and married to a Veteran making us a military family for more than 22 years. I studied psychology and business at Upper Iowa University, building a strong foundation for my work in behavioral health.

After experiencing a life-changing accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury and short-term memory loss, I gained firsthand insight into the complexities of healing, resilience, and the importance of therapeutic approaches that support both mind and body.

Through my volunteer work as a Family Readiness Group Leader, my personal recovery journey, and my professional experience in behavioral health, I am inspired to help others experience how equine therapy can foster emotional regulation, confidence, connection, and healing.

Meet our Willow, the horse who has been a vital part of our family for the past seven years and has inspired our equine therapy program. She has been my husband's trusted therapy horse for six years. Willow is currently in her mid-20s and has a history of trauma from a horse trailer accident that occurred before she joined our family. Despite this, she is a kind and gentle horse who loves treats, apples, and carrots. She has a special gift of forming close connections and giving hugs. She also likes working with young kiddos.

Theo

Equine Therapy Practitioner

Theo

Our Theo, a gentle Buckskin Appaloosa with the cutest spots on his hindquarters. Having joined our family over a year ago as a rescue, Theo has overcome a tumultuous past marked by neglect and abandonment, which makes him more timid and shy. Nonetheless, like many rescue animals, Theo has a deep affection for attention and love. His favorite treats include grain, apple snacks, and he takes great pleasure in chin rubs. Theo also boasts a beautiful mane that flows in the wind, mirroring the beauty of his inner self. With his gentle nature, Theo is poised to provide comfort and support to individuals struggling with anxiety, fear, or loneliness.

 Meet Phox!
Originally came to us named Phoenix, but his playful personality quickly earned the name of “Phox”- O - Trot. As our youngest (10), and tallest horse, at around 16 hands, he brings big energy and even bigger character.

Phox is high-energy, eager to learn, and highly treat-motivated, but not so much for apples and carrots. As a therapy partner, he helps build leadership skills, non-verbal communication, and confidence, all with a fun, engaging spirit. We can’t wait for you to meet him!
